Masoor Dal

  • 1 cup masoor dal rinsed and soaked for 30 minutes (red lentils)
  • 1-2 tomatoes (chopped)
  • 1 green chilli (finely chopped, optional)
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 teaspoon kasuri methi (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh coriander leaves (garnish)
  • Lemon wedges for serving (optional)
  • Tadka

  • 2-4 tablespoons olive oil or ghee
  • 1 large onion (chopped or sliced)
  • 1/4 tsp asafoetida
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 Kashmiri red chilli (chopped)
  • Instructions
    1. Rinse the masoor dal thoroughly and soak in water for 30 minutes.
    2. Add the masoor dal, tomatoes, green chilli, kasuri methi, and salt to a pot with 3 cups of water and bring to a simmer. Simmer covered for 25-30 minutes. Until the dal is soft.
    3. Heat the ghee/oil in a pan at a med-high heat. Add the onion, asafoetida, cumin seeds, mustard seeds, turmeric powder, and Kashmiri red chilli. Saute for 2-minutes.
    4. Pour the hot tadka over top of the dal and gently stir to combine.
    5. Garnish the masoor dal curry with fresh coriander leaves. Serve hot with steamed rice or Indian bread (chapatti or naan). Optionally, serve with lemon wedges for a burst of citrus flavour.
